Designer Susan Domelsmith knows fashion can be sustainable. Choosing to utilize materials rescued from the shuttered jewelry factories of Providence, Rhode Island, this collection boasts relics of the boom time spanning the 1960’s and 1980’s during which the majority of American jewelry production began to travel overseas. “This collection pays homage through giving old components new life,” said Domelsmith. Jewelry from the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection was featured in the Fall/Winter 2011 fashion week presentation of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winner, Tara St. James, who also employs sustainability in her design.
Inspired by the mythology of the ancient Aztec, DLC Brooklyn’s latest collection embodies the beauty of the Mesoamerican culture with pieces named from the indigenous language. These pieces include the Uxmal brooch featuring graduated vintage deadstock gold, copper, silver and hematite beads that hang in a pattern from a gold pin. The Cimi earrings were produced from antiqued brass vintage discs enclosing a chain and bead tassel. Other pieces include statement necklaces, beaded bracelets, and stackable rings all featuring the rough elegance synonymous with the DLC Brooklyn name.
